A study is a room in a house which is used for paperwork, computer work, or reading. Historically, the study of a house was reserved for use as the private office and reading room of a family father as the formal head of a household. A classic traditional study is a dark room, often paneled, and has walls lined with expensive books from floor to ceiling. There probably is a desk, chair and lamp to work at. A modern study may contain a computer, telephone and other office supplies.

Studies and spanking

A study was traditionally a secluded room exclusively to be used by the head of the house. Therefore, children were often forbidden to enter it. However a child that had done (or was suspected to have done) a misdeed may have been ordered to report to the study to be questioned, lectured and/or to be punished. A traditional study is a setting that comes with seriousness, authority, discipline and greater privacy than almost any other room in the house. A study is a room no one else would walk into unless they are sent there.

The more expensive and beautiful a study is furnished, the more awe and respect it will instill in the person who enters it. For this reason, such studies are popular settings in many spanking stories and spanking videos. In an adult D/s relationship, the dominant may use a traditional study for privacy and to discipline the submissive partner.

Other rooms in a large house are similar to the study, e.g. the music room or the pool house.
