A ward, charge, or pupil is a minor looked after by a guardian. The terms are usually used in cases when the guardian is not the child's parent.
Another, now obsolete, meaning of ward is "an underage orphan".
The term charge for a child is also used in other in loco parentis situations, such as "a babysitter and her charge".
The term pupil also means schoolchild or student.
"In charge"
To be in charge of someone means to have responsibility and authority over that person.
