Subordination means to be subject to the orders or direction of another; to be of lower rank in a hierarchy. Such a person is called a subordinate.

Subordination is also the act of being properly obedient to a superior. Failure to be obedient (e.g. in the military) is called insubordination, and usually constitutes a [[punishment|punishable]] offense.

Subordination (and the willingness to be obedient) can be displayed by prostration, a reverential or submissive body position.
