Silent play is a type of role play in which the submissive is not permitted to speak or make any sound at all, usually under the threat of punishment if he or she does. This kind of play can also involve the dominant not speaking, so that the entire focus of the play is on the activities taking place. This may enhance the play and make it more intense.

The submissive may be spanked or subject to other treatment to try to make him or her speak.

Sometimes the silence is enforced by the use of gags and hoods, but usually only in the case of the submissive.
