A photobook is a book whose primary content is photographic. It may or may not have text. Many show the work of a single photographer.

In Japan

Photographers such as Shinz" Fukuhara were producing photography books in the 1920s. The postwar years brought low-priced photography books, such as the many volumes of Iwanami Shashin Bunko. From the 1950s onward, most Japanese photographers of note have had photobooks published.

However, the simplest Japanese translation of photobook is shashinshū (写真集), and the shashinshū section of a typical Japanese bookstore is full books of photographs of little or no documentary or artistic merit but instead conventional portraying currently popular celebs. Many are of cheesecake models (guradoru) famous for little else, or porn starlets (nūdoru) who also appear in "adult" movies; others are of singers, television personalites and so forth. They can contain as few as 15 or as many as 120 photos.

They are very popular with fans, as they are a good source of high quality photos of a popular celebrity. A musician may release a small photobook with an album or single release.

Vernacular photobooks

Storing digital images in traditional photo albums means printed copies and the pages of an album. With photobooks, a real book with its own images and texts can be created. The resulting book is printed on digital color printers and bound.

Professional printing and binding services offer free software for easy creation of photobooks with professional layouts and individual layout capabilities. Because of the integrated design and order workflow, hardcover bound books with customized pictures and text can be produced very cost-effectively.

Japanese Photobooks

Photographers such as Shinzō Fukuhara were producing photography books in the 1920s. The postwar years brought low-priced photography books, such as the many volumes of Iwanami Shashin Bunko magazine. From the 1950s onward, most Japanese photographers of note have had photo books published.

The simplest Japanese translation of photo book is shashinshū (写真集), and the shashinshū section of a typical Japanese bookstore displays books of photographs with various levels of documentary or artistic merit. Many are of cheesecake models (guradoru), or porn starlets (nūdoru); others are of singers, television personalities, professional sportswomen (often wrestlers) and so forth.

One of the best selling Japanese photobooks of all time, "Santa Fe" (1991) (see below), a fine art nude photo book (see picture at right) modelled by Rie Miyazawa and photographed by Kishin Shinoyama, sold 1.5 million copies in the early 1990s. Personalized

Storing digital images in traditional photo albums means printed copies are inserted in the pages of an album. Companies allow users to create personalized photo books. The resulting book is printed on digital color printers and case bound.

Professional printing and binding services offer easy creation of photo books with professional layouts and individual layout capabilities. Because of the integrated design and order workflow, hardcover bound books with customized pictures and text can be produced very cost-effectively.

Currently there are many photo book software companies who sell licensed solutions to photo labs and print houses so that their customers can create photo books (and other photo related paraphernalia) with ease. These software solutions are available for free download or online access or through apps.

Online

The development of digital cameras and the Internet allowed an enormous production and exchange of pictures, taken from different corners of the globe. There are many possibilities nowadays for users to upload and share pictures (examples are Google and Facebook). However, many people and institutions also publish 'photo books' on the web, by providing the community with a huge web database freely available for everybody.

Santa Fe (book)

Santa Fe is a Japanese nude photo book published in 1991. It was modelled by Rie Miyazawa and photographed by Kishin Shinoyama. It was published with one image showing pubic hair without any kind of mosaic. It sold 1.5 million copies. Taken early in Miyazawa's career, it stunned Japanese society because the authorities had just begun to permit the publication of such kinds of "hair-nude" photographs.

The book was named after Santa Fe, New Mexico, where her photos were taken. Santa Fe, New Mexico's historic state capital, is also known as a city of arts.

After Miyazawa and Santa Fe, many Japanese women celebrities followed her in releasing "hair-nude" photo books.
