Its first volume was first published in Leipzig in 1913. It is not known whether any other volumes were ever written or published.

The book discusses the history of flagellantism in antiquity, with respect to religion, [pedagogy|pedagogics]], slavery, judicial corporal punishment and other areas.

Other editions

In 1932, the book was reissued (also in Leipzig) under the title Der Flagellantismus im Altertum. For this issue, the author used the pseudonym Georg Friedrich Collas.
