Ship corporal punishment

Infractions of rules aboard ships of the seventeenth and eighteenth-century ships was ordered by senior officers, usually the Captain, and meted out by the Boatswain mate or Gunners mate.

Shipboard corporal punishment was usually consisted of:

• Kissing the gunner's daughter
• Flogging while bound to a mast or other non-moveable part of the ship
• Extra duty (painting, working in the kitchen, galley, etc.)
• Standing extra watches ('guarding the parade grounds', etc)
• Being hung from the yardarm
• Bread and water
• Reduced rations
• Reduction in grade or Reduction of pay
• Restriction to quarters (or restriction to the ship)
• Running the gauntlet
• Keelhauling
