A Brief History

The Lifestyle Organization began in 1969 when Robert and Geri McGinley first opened the doors of Club WideWorld in Anaheim, California. This was a private, on-premise Swing club that grew so fast Robert and Geri saw the immediate need for a national, multifaceted organization designed to provide educational services and recreational opportunities to couples who yearned to lead lives free from archaic religious and political restrictions. The McGinleys proclaimed a true ethos of pluralism by naming their new association The Lifestyle Organization. Its philosophy was nothing less than an affirmation of the Bill of Rights and individual freedom in America. Couples would be invited to express that freedom without shame and, indeed, with a dignity that denoted a proud acceptance of their natural human sexuality. The group's motto was, appropriately enough, taken from one of this nation's greatest individualists, author Jack London, who said: The Proper Function of Man is to Live - Not to Exist.

The first annual LIFESTYLES Convention was held in 1973 on a ranch in Riverside, California. The weekend of social events and educational seminars drew 125 participants. That number doubled the following year and featured such speakers as Dr. Edgar Butler, the well-known educator, author and head of the Department of Sociology at the University of California. Dr. Butler later joined the organization's Board of Directors. Over the years, such pioneers in the field of Human Sexuality as Dr. Albert Freedman (founder of FORUM magazine) and Dr. William Baird (known as the Father of Reproductive Rights) came forward to lend their heartfelt support to the organization.

As attendance at successive conventions continued to grow, the Lifestyles Organization grew apace. It now owns a two-story building where some two dozen employees manage various departments including a clothing line, videos and books, the original Club WideWorld, bi-weekly dances and parties, the annual convention, and a full-service travel agency. Lifestyles Tours & Travel started in 1985. Right from the beginning, it offered a new concept in tourism - the PlayCouples' Holiday. Here the ambiance of the LIFESTYLE convention is transported to exotic locations around the world where entire resorts and cruise ships are filled by member couples. This allowed the agency to prosper far beyond other competing tour and travel companies. In fact, the astounding success enjoyed by Hedonism resorts in Jamaica may be traced directly to the ongoing support of Lifestyles Tours and Travel.

By the early 1990s, the PlayCouple Philosophy had been embraced by thousands of couples around the world. While the religious and political conservatives were preaching that open sexual expression was sinful and worthy of punishment, ever-increasing numbers of people were abandoning the notion that sex was a matter of male aggressors vanquishing female victims. PlayCouples were beginning to speak out in both public and private forums to decry the dishonesty that was for so long - too long - advocated as the standard of morality. Sex between consenting couples is a natural, wholesome behavior and to pretend it is not is to encourage physical and mental disorder.

In 1995 an overseeing corporation was formed under which the various arms of the organization were consolidated. The Lifestyle Organization, Lifestyle Tours & Travel, the PlayCouples Club, PlayCouples On-Line, and Club WideWorld were united under LSO Ltd. The annual LIFESTYLE convention is now the world's largest, longest-running such event. Of the 35,000 association members worldwide, approximately 3500 couples attend the four-day gathering that features a Sensuous Art Show, almost 50 workshops and seminars, three theme dances, 150 vendors in the Adult MarketPlace, an Award's Luncheon, pool parties, and much more.
