Joe DeMers
Joe DeMers (1910-1984) specialized in that most transitory and ephermeral area of illustration, depicting the modern American girl. He did them, not as stereotypes, but as a diverse array of dazzling females - sweet, predatory or sophisticated. DeMers was born in San Diego, California and attended the Chouinard Art School and later the Brooklyn Museum Art School. He spent about ten tears as a production illustrator and designer for motion pictures, mostly for Warner Brothers Studios. His first illustration assignment was for Fortune magazine in 1937, followed by assignments from Esquire, and then from most of the other major magazines in the United States and Europe. In his later years, he was a resident of Hilton Head Island in South Carolina and the proprietor of an art gallery there.
