Head space
Head space, also spelled head-space, is a roleplay term that refers to the altered state of mind when someone assumes the role of a different person, an animal, or any other character.
Techniques
Role-play is more fun and a more satisfying experience for both players when they manage to get into a good head space. A person can learn that ability by practice, or it may come naturally to them, but there are also various techniques that can aid getting into head space, such as:
- Trying to think like their role would think.
- Using a tone of voice or way of speaking matching the role.
- Using phrases matching the role -- even and especially stereotypical ones.
- Using forms of address matching the role, such as "mistress", "daddy", "sir", "ma'am", "young lady", "young man".
- Using clothing matching the role, such as child or baby costumes, school uniforms, animal costumes, or fetish clothing for BDSM roleplay.
- Using props, from collars to plushies, furniture such as school desks or cages, or decorating whole rooms as play rooms.
Some of these may work particularly strong on an individual player as a trigger.
A useful advice is that even when it may feel embarrassing or silly, to still say the stereotypical catch phrase: it will likely work on your mind anyway. Plus, it will help one's play partner get deeper into their head space.
