In language structure, a diminutive, or diminutive form, is a formation of a word used to convey a slight degree of the root meaning, the smallness of the object or quality named, encapsulation, intimacy, or endearment. It is the opposite of an augmentative.

Diminutives are often used for the purpose of expressing affection. In many languages, the meaning of diminution can be translated as "tiny" or "wee", and diminutives are used frequently when speaking to small children; adult people sometimes use diminutives when they express extreme tenderness and intimacy by behaving and talking like children.

An example of diminutive in the English language is "undies" for underwear or "jammies" for pajamas. Diminutives can also be used with names, creating a nickname. For example, "Tommy" is a diminutive of Tom (which in turn is a diminutive of Thomas).

Diminutive in ageplay

The use of diminutives is a major part of ageplay, for it is the easiest way to get into role. Both the player and the guardian can start using the diminutives appropriate for their role in their speech: the Adult Child because that's the way they talk at their play age, and the guardian because that's how grown-ups speak when they are talking to a child.

Diminutive in punishment

In actual punishment, in consensual BDSM and spanking play, and in spanking fiction, the diminutive form can be used to belittle a spankee, for example when referring to their persons, their body parts, or items of their clothing. This can help to bring the spanker (and an audience, bystanders or readers) into thinking of the spankee as a smaller child than they are. It can also help to bring the spankee themselves into an age regressed state of mind.

In some languages, the diminutive form plays a much greater role than in others. An example of heavy use of the diminutive form in a spanking novel is Der Flokati: Das Nackedasein.
