Twins

Twins are two offspring produced from the same pregnancy. Twins can be either monozygotic ('identical'), meaning they develop from one zygote that splits to form two embryos, or dizygotic ('non-identical' or 'fraternal'), meaning each twin develops from a separate egg, with each egg fertilized by its own sperm cell. Since identical twins develop from a single zygote, they will share the same sex, whereas fraternal twins may or may not. In very rare cases, fraternal (and semi- or half-identical) twins can have the same mother but different fathers.

In contrast, a fetus that develops alone in the womb (which is much more common in humans) is known as a singleton, while the general term for one offspring from a multiple birth is multiple. Unrelated look-alikes whose resemblance mirrors that of twins are called doppelgängers.
