Whips and Whip Making

A whip is single, flexible and tapered cord with a braided cover, unlike floggers, etc, which have more than one tail. Its primary purpose has been to make a loud sound, or crack, to direct or guide animals as a herd.

The 'crack' or 'pop' created is the result of tangential velocity of the end of the whip causing the end of the whip to exceed the speed of sound (Mach 1.0) which varies dep[ending on altitude and humidity.

Bullwhips can be made using 8 to 64 plaits over a central core, and can range in price from a few hundred to several thousand dollars US.
