{{header} A prison officer, also known as a corrections officer, detention officer, prison guard or prison warder, is an employee of the state, who works in a prison guarding and overseeing the prisoners who are sentenced to be there.

It is the prison officer who is charged with the daily task of locking and unlocking a prisoner into his or her cell.

In countries where judicial corporal punishment is still used, it is often a prison officer who carries out the sentence. Where such a sentence has been imposed for offences within prison, it will usually be carried out by the prison officer.
