Lotion
A lotion is an emulsion of oil, water and other ingredients to be applied to the bare skin, usually with the bare hands. Most lotions are oil-in-water emulsions but water-in-oil lotions are also formulated. Lotions are similar to creams but less greasy and more liquid. They moisturize the skin and make it smoother and softer. Examples of lotions are sunscreens and after sun lotions.
Related topical preparations include ointments, liniments and gels.
Lotions and spanking
Lotions can be used to treat the skin of the buttocks after a spanking (to soothe the pain and help the skin heal). Cooling, soothing lotions (e.g. after-sun products) are good for this kind of after-care.
Lotions can also be used before a spanking session to prepare the buttocks for the spanking. This, unlike the use of plain water or oil for the same purpose, comes with the side-effect of making the skin sticky for some time - an effect that may be desired or not.
Other use
Aside from medical use and usage in skin care, lotions are often used as accessories to aid massage or masturbation, or to accompany sexual intercourse. Due to the direct and intense contact of hand and skin when the lotion is rubbed in, and the way the lotion makes the skin soft, wet and slippery there is a great erotic side-effect of using lotions.
Lotions are also very popular in ageplay scenarios such as diapering.
As lotions contain oil, they should not be used in combination with rubber or latex, e.g. condoms, fetish clothing or sex toys of such materials.
