HTML (or Hyper Text Mark-up Language) is a non-proprietary format based upon SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language [Note 1]) . The standards for HTML are governed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). HTML is a way to generically format a text document and contextually connect it with other such documents.

Most HTML documents are World Wide Web pages. Web browsers are used to display such HTML pages.

HTML pages can be static (as files, which usually end in .HTML or .HTM) or can be created dynamically via scripts using languages such as PHP.
