The term flagellomania combines the meanings of:
- flagellantism, an enthusiasm for flogging or whipping,
- erotic pleasure or sexual arousal derived from whipping or from being whipped. See also sadism, masochism, spanking fetishism, spankophile and erotic spanking.
Origins and use
The word flagellomania came up around 1900 and is derived from Latin flagellum (whip) and the suffix -mania (obsession). The word was used mainly by writers searching for a proper term to express the concept, e.g. in sexological research. The corresponding term in German is Flagellomanie.
Examples:
- Der Komplex der Flagellomanie by Ernst Schertel, 1930
- Die Flagellomanie und ihre heutigen Erscheinungsformen by Peter Franz]], 1952
