A graphic novel (sometimes abbreviated GN) is a book-length self-contained story told in comics (or manga) form and published in a single binding. It is the comics equivalent to a novel or novella.
It can apply to works which were previously published serially in periodical comic books, or to works produced specifically for book-format publication. In the comic book industry, the minimum page count for a graphic novel can be 48, 64, 72, or 96 pages.
The term "graphic novel" was popularized by Will Eisner. Eisner is famous for his "The Spirit" and "John Law" graphic novels
