Locks and Keys

It is important to say that chains, locks and keys are all a matter of personal preference.

When choosing locks, it is important to make sure they are compatible with the chain you are using. When using chain, you need to remember that the amount of adjustment is plus or minus one link. A very large link chain means that "the prisoner" might be able to just pull her wrist out of the loop made by chain and lock. If the chain link is to small, most locks will not fit through the links. Also, when buying chain, buy it at the same time as buying locks. Make sure the bail of the lock fit easily and smoothly through the several links of the chain.

Master Locks manufactures a very wide range of types and sizes of locks. I talk about Master Locks in this article, but there are many other manufacturers.

(Joke: I think that the use of Master locks is appropriate since we are discussing Master/Schlage relationships.)

I personally like the small lock in the shape of a heart that uses the same key as all of my handcuffs. It seems appropriate to have a Master Key on my key chain.

I suggest that you buy chain and locks ahead of time. Try different lengths of chains in various combinations of locks: wrist to wrist; ankle to ankle; etc. (Also, trying to cut chain while in session is sometimes a real problem.)

You can also use them in combinations such as a transportation chain harness where a chain is placed around the neck, connecting to the wrist chains, then around the waist, and finally to ankle chains.

I take a six inch piece of small link chain and then put a 2" diameter key ring on each end. When I store my locks in my toy bag, I lock all of them on one key ring, and all of my keys on the other key ring. When I want to use a lock, I have to open it with a key on the key ring. This insures that I have a key in my possession to open the lock. On a regular basis, I check all of the keys and locks, and put a drop of oil in the lock to extend their useful lives.

Since most of my locks use the same key as my handcuffs, I purchased a handcuff key from Streamlight. It has two small LED flashlights, one facing each direction, that can also be used as emergency lighting if you are someplace and you lose power.

Regardless of what type of locks and keys you decide to buy, make sure you have several spares located in different, safe places.
