Daniel James is a British fetish fashion designer.

He was born in London in 1959. From 1975 to 1980 he trained as a theatrical costumier and make-up artist working for the likes of Kate Bush on the lion costume for the album Lion Hart and with Ken Loach as an assistant make-up artist on the film Black Jack.

In 1982 he established Daniel James Designs after he and his nightclub business partner opened the original Skin Two nightclub in Soho, London.

Daniel James quickly realised that there was a market for couture rubberwear and, with features in Vogue, Elle, and The Times, he rapidly emerged as the leading designer and manufacturer of haute-couture rubberwear.

Through his extensive experience of this exclusive material Daniel James has perfected manufacturing techniques that are unprecedented in quality. His creations offer a unique combination of the traditional restraints of fetishism with the aesthetic elements of classic fashion.

At Daniel James' Kensington shop his clients ranged from the very private collector to international celebrities including Cher, Lauren Hutton and Zandra Rhodes. He also created costumes for Clairol, Honda, Pirelli, Toyah and Steve Strange.

In the winter of 1983 he met the late great Bob Carlos Clarke who became a close friend; this was the start of a five year collaboration between Bob and Daniel. In 1984 they worked together to create the first coffee book style mail-order catalogue Maid In London which has now become a true collectors' item. They worked on many designs together and Daniel became thematic to Bob's second book The Dark Summer.
