Finishing School
A Finishing school or Deportment school is a school—usually an elite type of private boarding school—where mostly young ladies (and sometimes gentlemen) receive instruction and training on good deportment and etiquette. This may consist of an intensive course, or a one-year programme.
Such schools, or deportment classes, were particularly common from the late-19th to the mid-20th century and were particularly strict during that period. Today, deportment training still exists, but in more relaxed forms, in what are often called Etiquette Schools. For example, The Etiquette School of New York in Manhattan and Southampton is dedicated to "teaching individuals of all ages the social skills they need to succeed." In the United States, finishing schools are also sometimes called charm schools.
These institutions are highly exclusive (and expensive) and are designed to cater to the children of the most wealthy and prominent members of society. For example, Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales (1961-1997) concluded her education at an extremely prestigious finishing school in Switzerland.
Novels and stories
In works of fiction, these schools are sometimes used as the setting for erotic fantasy stories.
Adult graphic novels about corporal punishment in finishing schools include Mrs. Tyrant's Finishing School by Eric Stanton (circa 1960s) and Angels Hill Finishing School (2012) by Ian Hamilton.
The Soreness of a Finishing School is a short story published in Roue magazine (Vol. 10, 1980).
Finishing School by Scott Church (LSF Publications, 2014) is a Kindle edition novel.
Mainstream films
- Finishing School (1934), drama about the trials and tribulations of students in a private, snobbish girls school.
- Finishing School (Italy-France, 1953), a romantic drama.
- La Residencia aka The Finishing School and The House That Screamed (1969), is a Spanish horror film that's possibly the first concerning a stalker in a girls' boarding school. The film includes a fetishistic whipping of a disobedient teenage girl (photos).
- French Finishing School (1979), French-American softcore porn about the sexual corruption of innocent students.
Aristasia
Miss Martindale is a controversial English writer, columnist, and creator of Aristasia, a roleplay society that resembles a 1950s-style finishing school. Martindale plays the headmistress who enforces an extensive list of strict rules.
Her eccentric lifestyle is the subject of the British documentary A Weekend at Miss Martindale’s (1996).
She also contributed to The Female Disciplinary Manual: A Complete Encyclopaedia of the Correction of the Fair Sex (1997) by Regina Snow. In 2002, MIB Productions released The Female Disciplinary Manual, a corporal punishment video partly inspired by the book.
