The Day of the Locust (1975) is a period piece drama about Hollywood directed by John Schlesinger. The story is based on the novel by Nathanael West. The film stars Karen Black, William Atherton, Donald Sutherland, and Burgess Meredith.

Synopsis

The story explores the seamy, unromantic side of the Hollywood film industry in the 1930s. A young art director (Atherton) falls in love with an aspiring starlet (Black) who is plagued by personal and professional problems.

The spanking scene

Thirty minutes into the story, a scene takes place at an upscale Hollywood "sporting house" (brothel). Wealthy patrons gather to watch a silent French stag film called La Predicament de Cherie. In this, a man with a hairbrush is briefly seen spanking a French maid who is laying face down on a bed.
