Location of Swaziland / Eswatini

The country of Swaziland changed its name to the Kingdom of Eswatini in April 2018 for several reasons, including:

  • To avoid confusion with Switzerland: The name change was intended to prevent people from confusing the country with Switzerland, which has a similar name and is also landlocked and mountainous.
  • To use the country's indigenous language, eSwatini means "land of the Swazis" in the Swazi language.
  • To shed British colonial ties: King Mswati III said the name change was intended to remove vestiges of the country's colonial past.

King Mswati III announced the name change during celebrations for the country's 50th anniversary of independence from British rule and the king's 50th birthday. The king had previously used the name eSwatini in addresses to the UN and at the opening of parliament.
