Defecation, or defaecation, also known as excrement, is the act of eliminating solid, semisolid or liquid waste material (fecal matter) from the digestive tract via the anus. Waves of muscular contraction (peristalsis) in the walls of the colon move fecal matter through the digestive tract towards the rectum.
The position adopted during defecation varies from culture to culture. The most natural and instinctive method used is the squatting position. Another popular position is sitting on a toilet.
After defecation, the anus and buttocks are cleansed by wiping with toilet paper or similar paper products, or by using water.
