Berlin is the capital of Germany, located in the northeastern part of the country. It has a population of 3.5 million, making it the largest city in Germany and one of the most populous cities in Europe. It has a temperate seasonal climate. About two-thirds of the city are urbanized, with the remainder being the natural environment.
Berlin was the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia (1701-1918), the German Empire (1871-1918), the Weimar Republic (1919-1933), and Nazi Germany (1933-1945). After World War II (1939-1945), the city was divided into East Berlin (capital of East Germany) and West Berlin (a West German enclave surrounded by the Berlin Wall from 1961-1989). Berlin was restored as the capital of Germany when the West and the East reunified in 1990.
