'Wikipedia is a vast storehouse of information, but because of their 'Global Community' approach, they have had to place limits on informational content and size, and rightfully so. (It's their sandbox, their rules.) Some of the information that I think people should have is, because of content, prohibited. I have found, however, that I really enjoy the wiki format, and decided to learn yet another programming style so that I might present my personal work here as well.

This information is placed on the web in a wiki format (instead of "tree-ware") where it can be available to everyone free of charge.

It is also a place where I can write and store my personal history and stories so people can learn about me, the way I think, and a little bit more about how I got to be where I am today.

My approach is to present one part oral history, one part knowledge base, and a very large part love. To make this project easy to navigate, I have divided SM-201 into several parts:

  • Micropedia: a very basic list of definitions with links to the Macropedia
  • Macropedia: a place for longer articles, FAQ's and "How-to's"
  • Life Lessons: the 'Sanity Management' part of this body of work
  • Icons: an extension of the BackDrop 'Honorifics' Project, and
  • History: mine, yours, local and Global, with a Timeline (started by Tony DeBlaise but it has been updated by us.)

History, as I have said elsewhere, is "His Story" of the past, and is written by the victors and the survivors of the past. As they say, "If you win the war, you're a Patriot; otherwise, you're executed as just another terrorist rebel!" I have tried to be candid about the history as I have presented it.

This wiki is being put together as a result of a book project I started some forty years ago when BackDrop was in Hayward. It was originally written on quadrille paper in Engineering Manuals (yes I still have some of them!) and was without a title. About five years ago, the project was moved to the back burner, but only medium heat was added. I began by having several of my "Admin Assistants" editing and formatting various articles that I had written. Having just celebrated my 65th birthday, I have turned up the heat to become an easy boil. In February of 2007, I began expanding this wiki to include some "non-kinky" articles that are erotic in nature. An example of this expansion is the addition of the articles on Playboy, Penthouse and erotic dance. Although they may not, directly, be BDSM articles, they have definitely shaped the fantasies of many people over the years. You young "whipper-snappers" should know your parents, grandparents and your really GREAT grandparents.

During the past four decades, SM/BDSM has come out of the closet and become a mainstream identity. In the 50s you could lose a job and your family for being kinky. In January of 2007, Sara and I taught a college-level class on "How to Become a Professional Dominatrix" for a college in San Francisco. Yes, times have changed.

This project was originally titled "BDSM: Boundaries, Definitions, and Sanity Management" but it has kind of evolved into "SM-201" (Thanks, Jay).

During the past five years, I have hired several "Personal Assistants", each of whom has added a few of their personalities to help take the edge of my "Technical Manual" style of writing. Many people have helped edit and correlate all of the data being presented here, and this work is dedicated to you. Thanks to all of you.

And so to my parents; lovers and loved ones; ex-wives and children; to all of the ladies with 'RR' in your names; helpers; and to my friends (past, present, and future), this project is my gift to you.
