If you are looking for light erotic fantasy then this is the wrong book. For one thing the writing is much better than the generality of erotica, in fact better than most books period. The characters well developed and interesting, although not always likable. The author lets you get inside their heads and emotions except for the delibrately mysterious Chris Parker and Master Grendal. To me its less erotica than a rather intense psychological study. In the novel, four marketplace slave candidates go through preparation for auction. The process is much like boot camp or cult programming in which they are broken down and rebuilt. Slowly they are brought to a mind set closer to the Old Guard ideal of selfless servitude. Its rather disturbing, although fascinating. Its made clear in the novel that although they are often brutally used, the process is consensual. They always have the option of leaving. I found it odd that none of them gave this option much consideration even when they were weeping with frustration. Considered from this perspective there aren't many better books on the topic. As an erotic novel however it works less well. The "hot" scenes are few and while interesting never really smolder. I think that this may be because all of the slaves are more or less vetrans of the D/s scene so there is no sense of seducion, shock or initiation. They take the beatings, sex and humilations more or less in stride and this blunts the effectiveness of the scenes.

Laura Antoniou
Laura Antoniou has been writing erotica for over 20 years, when her day job permits her the time. She lives in Queens with her wife Karen, and happily serves as boy to Kim Attica. Friends have called her all sorts of names. Current favorites being "Renaissance Perv" by Fetish Diva Midori and "Woof! Good Lesbian!" by Master Steve Sampson of Butchman's Academy, "Good Boy!" by Kim and of course, "best thing that ever happened to me" by Karen.
Laura is best known these days for her "Marketplace" series of novels, but back in the beginning, when pickings for good and readable porn was slim, Laura created the groundbreaking "Leatherwomen" anthologies, and edited several others. Some of the work she created for those anthologies are reprinted in The Catalyst and Other Tales. Laura's work has been published in the United States, Germany, Japan, and Korea, to international acclaim. She is personally featured in Writing Below the Belt: Conversations with Erotic Authors, by Michael Rowe and The Burning Pen: Sex Writers on Sex Writing, by M.Christian. Laura was also a columnist for Girlfriends magazine from 1995-1997, the submissions editor for Badboy and Bi-Curious magazines from 1995-96, and a regular contributor to The SandMUtopia Guardian from 1993-2000.
