"Robin's New England Vacation"

Shortly after Susan and I met, we decided to get married. We thought it only right that we travel to New Hampshire to visit her parents. Our itinerary was to fly to Logan Airport in Boston, get a rental car and drive to New Hampshire. Our return trip allowed us to take the train to New York City for a few days and then fly home. On our third day in New Hampshire (a Friday night) we announced that we would be driving to Boston for dinner and a show. The parents were aghast that we would drive 40 miles to Boston and back in a single day. I then tried to explain that it was not unusual for people in San Jose to drive to San Francisco, a distance of fifty-plus miles, for just dinner.

After a marvelous dinner {Pierone's restaurant, a venue that I had visited years before with my parents was gone) we drove to Manray's for an evening of enjoyment. Susan made a quick stop in the lady's room, and we were ready. The people at Manray's were quite hospitable and made us feel welcome and quite at home.

We returned to New Hampshire before daybreak to a; "You shouldn't stay out that late. You never know what may happen." I really didn't have the heart to tell her what did happen. (LOL)

The following day, we drove to Boston, checked in the rental car, and boarded the train for New York City. The spiffy blue and white NHHH train cars of my childhood were gone. They had been replaced by a mish-mash of cars painted in a myriad number of colors.

Arriving in New York, Susan was dressed in white cotton bell-bottoms, a blue sailor blouse with white piping, and heels. (You may notice a pattern here.) Just as we approached our hotel, a brief summer shower dampened our clothes but not our spirits.

We strolled around Times Square. For those who are not aware, many of the theaters around New York do not sell every seat for every show. About four to six hours before showtime, they release the their unsold tickets to a company that sells them at severe discounts. As they say, "Better a few bucks than an empty seat". We had a choice of several shows but decided on a late afternoon performance of "Cats". The seats were extraordinary: orchestra row four center. And they were together.

Susan had never been to a live performance - stage presentation. One word: marvelous idea!

As the theater emptied after the show, just we exited - there it was. A purple and white hansom cab with a purple fringe. The evening was getting cool so the coachman offered a blanket to keep our legs and feet warm. We toured Central Park. When the coachman found we were about to get married, he gifted us an extra hour.

That was an afternoon to remember. The train to New York, "Cats" and the Central Park cab ride. She had curled up, her head on my chest ...

There is a Mel Brooks movie quote: "It's good to be the King".

Ahh, but it is better to be Master Robin!!
